This project is a joint experiment of Keio University’s Digital Cinema Consortium, the WIDE Project, and the Interactive Media Division of the USC School of Cinematic Arts, with special support by Cisco Systems and IBM Japan. This project aims to connect continents by 10Gbps Ultra high speed Internet, and realize a collaborative motion picture editing environment for remote places utilizing a collaborative editing system.

Currently, people who are involved in editing for motion pictures (i.e. editors, directors and clients) need to gather in one place to edit a scene. But recently, shooting is carried out all over the world and production studios of many countries work together for a single motion picture production, so it has become increasingly difficult to gather the whole staff in one place. In this project, the Digital Cinema Consortium envisions the near future with editing facility, visual effects houses and production studios to be connected by ultra high speed Internet. To achieve this goal, BAJA, a collaborative editing system, is developed to suit the IPv6 networked environment, and it will be released with an Open Source license.

BAJA is compliant to IBM’s ultra high definition PC monitor (with 3840×2400) that enables simultaneous display of multiple HD resolution clips during the edit session. By using BAJA, each remotely located staff in different studios is able to efficiently work on the same scene in a real-time collaborative environment. An additional feature of BAJA includes a P2P distributed file system with content management to account for file management in the distributed network collaboration environment. As a result, the files can be treated as if they reside in a single virtual disk while working with BAJA.

BAJA provides a collaborative editing environment that allows the director and the editor to be remotely located during the editing session. This environment can be extended to provide remote editing environment into visual effects production process. Furthermore, the editing process and location shooting can be integrated in the BAJA architecture. This enables the production procedures to be done in real time, improves efficiency level and accelerates international participation in a motion picture production.
